The service was established during the First World War and operated again during the Second World War.
The “Y” name was derived from Wireless Interception (WI). The stations tended to be one of two types, for intercepting the signals and for direction finding, identifying where the signals were coming from. Many Y-stations were operated by radio amateurs acting as Volunteer Wireless Interceptors.
